Alan Thorpe
Alan Thorpe was the Director General of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) between 2011 and 2016. Prior to 2011, he was the Chief Executive of the UK's Natural Environment Research Council (NERC; between 2005 and 2011). Before 2005, he was the Director of the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research.
Alan Thorpe has a long career as an academic at the University of Reading. His research has been on the dynamics and predictability of organized convective storms and extra tropical weather systems and latterly on climate. He has played major roles in international programs such as FASTEX and THORPEX.
Alan Thorpe visited the Meteorological Institute in Munich on December 12th and 14th and DLR Oberpfaffenhofen on December 13th, 2016. He gave a talk on December 12th at the meteorological colloquium.
